40 Hour Core Advocacy Training

This free, weeklong training provides the foundational skills for advocates and first responders who have begun work in the domestic violence and sexual assault fields in New Mexico’s tribal communities. Those who complete the training are eligible for state certification.
Participants will explore the dynamics of domestic violence in tribal communities, including:
- Historical trauma
- Human trafficking of Native women and children
- Orders of protection
- Domestic violence against members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community
- Safety planning and confidentiality
- Explore the impacts of domestic violence on Native children
The training also focuses on the role of advocates, who will also learn self-care skills to enable them to be champions for the victim while maintaining a healthy mind and spirit.
Course Objectives
• Provide foundational training on the dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault in tribal communities from the perspective of the Native American victim/survivor, child witness, and perpetrator.
• Provide best practices to improve collaboration and partnership among tribal leadership, advocates, and criminal justice and community professionals through a multidisciplinary approach.
• Promote effective domestic violence training, prevention, awareness and risk reduction programs.

Travel
A limited number of travel scholarships (mileage and/or lodging) are available. Non-CSVANW members can apply but priority will be given to CSVANW members. Recipients will be notified on October 19. Click here to apply for a scholarship.
